28 Years Later new trailer has horrifying connection to first movie

A haunting new trailer for Danny Boyle’s anticipated 28 Years Later has arrived, and not only does it look like the best horror movie of 2025, but it also has a horrifying connection to the first movie.
Unsurprisingly, the upcoming horror movie is a sequel to both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, taking place three decades after the rage virus broke out and caused the world to be overrun by terrifying fast zombies.
The first entry to the horror franchise was nothing short of a masterpiece, meaning it’s got mighty big boots to fill. However, with Boyle back in the director’s seat, Alex Garland on writing duties, and some excellent teasers, there are high hopes for the new movie.
What’s more, 28 Years Later is set to be a trilogy, with the second entry – The Bone Temple – dropping in 2026. Until then, a new trailer for the first has landed.
28 Years Later launches terrifying new trailer
As well as showing us more of Jodie Comer as Isla, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, and Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, but a scene closer to the end shows a priest gone mad. He says to an unseen character, “This is a glorious day. A day of judgement.”
A gang of zombies then burst through the stained glass windows and run down the pews, as the priest shouts, “Yes, my children!” If you remember back to the first movie, this echoes the moment Cillian Murphy headed to a church after waking up out of his coma.
On the walls, the words, “The end is extremely f**king nigh” are written in blood. He hopes to take sanctuary, only to find the place is packed full of bodies and zombies. It’s a cool little nod, and one of many we can no doubt look forward to with Garland and Boyle back together.
The trailer has certainly excited the fans, with one writing, “God f**king bless Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. Never nor will I ever be this excited for a film ever again man.”
Another wrote, “This is my most anticipated movie of this year (more so since another one I was looking forward to was recently uh… put on hold let’s say). I can’t wait to see what’s in store.”
As for what to expect in the new film, the official synopsis reads, “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.
“One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway.
“When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
28 Years Later drops in cinemas on June 20, 2025. In the meantime, check out our rundown of the best horror movies ever, the best zombie movies, and the scariest horrors based on true stories.
