Spencer has begun a very difficult journey back home in 1923 Season 2, and there’s a hint that he might just encounter a new villain, who’s actually a real person. (Warning: spoilers ahead!)
1923 Season 2 Episode 1 just brought fans back up to speed. Part of that includes Spencer’s life post-arrest, and he’s now working on an Italian ship.
It’s a dark world on the boat, and Spencer soon has to come to the defence of his new friend, Luca. By saving his life and working together to earn some money, it’s clear Spencer and Luca will be together for a few episodes, at least.
However, Luca just name-dropped some family members that are actually real life people. And if Spencer gets involved with them, things may not turn out so great for the Dutton.
1923 will likely introduce the real-life Maceo Organization
While working together in the engine room of the ship, Luca mentions the name of his cousins to Spencer: Salvatore and Rosario Maceo.
Now, given how 1923 takes place during the Prohibition Era and how the episode descriptions leaked that Spencer would be spending time in Galveston, it’s clear that Luca is referring to the Maceo Organization. If one or both of Luca’s cousins make an appearance, it could spell trouble.
The Maceo Organization was a real criminal syndicate in Galveston, Texas – then known as the “Free State of Galveston” – an area that encouraged illegal activities such as gambling and liquor trading.
The Maceo brothers (Sam and Rosario) played a major role in this area. They were the bosses of the organization and ran various gambling, bootlegging, and prostitution activities. They also ran hotspots like the Hollywood Dinner Club and the Balinese Room.
While the name-drop is brief, many viewers picked up on it as a sign of things to come for Spencer.
As one Redditor wrote, “I don’t know if there is enough time for this to really go far in season two but part of me wonders if Spencer’s dealings in Galveston mentioned in the short episode recap and his trouble in FW are connected to the Maceo family since it sounds like his new friend is VERY well connected in Galveston. The Maceos would have been rolling in cash during this time frame.”
Paramount“I’m wondering how much of the mobsters we will see,” another said. “I am betting the next episode or two definitely has Maceo family dealings but perhaps it ends when he leaves Galveston.”
But there’s one other important detail surrounding the Maceo family: they also had connections with mobsters from Chicago and New York. Who else is heading to New York? That’s right, Alex.
Hopefully Spencer’s entanglement with the crime family won’t get desperate enough for them to rally the troops in New York to find Spencer’s wife. But still, in the world of 1923, anything bad could happen.
