1923 Season 2 Episode 5 recap: Alex encounters more danger on the way to Billings

In 1923 Season 2 Episode 5, ‘Only Gunshots to Guide Us,’ the hunt for Teonna intensifies, Alex encounters a kind couple from her side of the pond, and Spencer finally gets a little closer to home. (Warning: spoilers ahead!)

In Episode 4, there was plenty of action. Zane got his skull cut open in a bid to save his life, Alex just caught her train after getting beaten and mugged, and Spencer had to go head-to-head with the Tax Collector. Oh, and we finally got the origins of the Train Station.

Now, the stakes are getting even higher. The law is closing in on Teonna and the Duttons don’t know what’s coming for them with Whitfield’s grand plan of stealing their land and turning it into a ski resort.

Episode 5 mostly focuses on another traumatic part of the journey for Alex, who encounters some trouble on her train. Plus, Teonna is unaware that Kent and Renaud are getting closer to finding her.

Trouble catches up to Teonna in 1923 Season 2 Episode 5

The episode begins with Father Renaud watching cowboys herd cattle through the town, a sight he describes as “fresh hell.” But his search for Teonna continues, and he and Marshal Kent spread her wanted poster around town.

Kent also runs into Anders, the cowboy who Teonna and Runs His Horse has been holding up with. He tries to lie through his teeth about seeing her, but Kent’s not buying it.

Anders doesn’t trust Kent, so he brings in Renaud to give them the full story behind Teonna’s murders. Finally Anders tells them about Teonna’s brief stint with them. With that, Kent and Renaud work out they’re heading north and take chase.

At the same time, Teonna, Runs His Horse and Pete are on the move once again. Pete decides to break away from the group and fetch water for the horses, believing he’ll be safe since the marshals aren’t looking for a lone rider.

Teonna is getting dejected with the potential of finding somewhere safe, telling Runs His Horse, “Everywhere is America.”

Alex gets a job on her train to survive

Meanwhile, Spencer is finding shade under a tree when he’s awakened by Mamie Fossett and her posse. They ask if he’s spotted either Teonna and her crew or Father Renaud and Fossett. She’s quickly suspicious of him when she learns he’s from Montana, which is where all the others are too.

Placing him under arrest, she decides to take him from Amarillo so they can work out his story and see if he’s involved with any of it.

Elsewhere, Alex is on her train towards Billings. She’s battered and bruised from all her encounters so far, and doesn’t get much luckier when she realises she can’t afford any food. Thankfully, she works out a deal in which she can eat for free if she works on the train, cleaning dishes and serving others.

On one carriage, she encounters an English couple who make fun of the Americans on the train, all before spilling some tea onto a man’s lap. He forces her to wipe him down intimately, also instructing her to bring him something sweet. At the end of it all, she finally gets something to eat for herself.

When she returns back to her cabin, she removed her shoes and finds her feet sore and bloody. But there’s no rest for her, since she’s instructed to return to the kitchen at six o’clock the next morning.

Alex fights back against another dangerous man

The next day, Alex serves the English couple once again at breakfast. When she accidently reveals herself as another Brit, the couple are rather delighted. He gives her a generous tip, which cheers her up until she sees the man from the night before who made her clean him up.

When he asks her about her stockings, she tries to play it cold and ignore his advances. But when she’s pouring him coffee, he reaches up her skirt, causing her to break out in tears. However, she comes to her senses and pours hot coffee on him, taking the coffee pot and smashing it into his face again and again until he passes out.

Not long after, she’s escorted to the back room and placed in a tiny prison-like cell. The conductor gives her a dark warning, saying that the consequences of her acting like a “wild animal” could be a lobotomy.

She begs for them to see reason, but they don’t seem interested, leaving her behind on her own to scream into her hands.

Spencer sends a message home

In Amarillo, Spencer and Mamie finally arrive to the local sheriff’s office. There, they meet Sheriff Hutchinson. Mamie’s impressed by their ever-growing station, but also compares it to the haunted Winchester house.

In his office, she makes a call to Bozeman, Montana, where she speaks to Sheriff McDowell. After a bit of back and forth about her being a woman, he vouches for Spencer’s identity and gets to speak to him too.

Spencer confirms he’s coming home, but McDowell warns him not to come back if he’s going to start a war with Whitfield. “Tell my aunt I’m coming home,” Spencer says. But McDowell asks him to come and speak to him first before he causes any trouble.

Finally, Spencer is free to go once again. But as part of the deal for his arrest, he tells Mamie, “I think you owe me a train ticket.”

At the Train Station, Banner is dumping the body of the woman Whitfield’s lover killed. It’s the first official use, and Banner marks the occasion by saying, “and just like that, a problem disappears.”

Now that one of Whitefield’s “dolls” has been lost, his lady friend goes out to find a new replacement. She finds one in a sex worker hanging around the speakeasy, but this one doesn’t seem as willing. However, after some convincing, she decides to go along with it. (And most certainly doesn’t know what she’s in for.)

Alex finally catches a break

Back on Alex’s train, the English couple, Paul and Hillary, are concerned about Alex’s wellbeing. The train has arrived at its station in Chicago, and Alex soon finds herself being pulled off by police. But Hillary and Paul jump in to intervene, and Hillary manages to talk the officer into letting her go.

However, another big problem arises: her connecting train to Fargo has been cancelled. Now she’s stranded, with no idea of how long it’ll take before she can get another train.

But as she wanders the station, Hillary sees her and offers her a chance to stay with them in Winnetka until she can leave again. (“It’ll remind you of Oxfordshire more than America,” Paul tells her.)

In the desert, Pete roams around looking for water. He finally finds a small patch, only to encounter Father Renaud and Marshal Kent taking a break in the same spot. When Kent sees him, he takes chase after Pete.

It’s an intense chase, which ends when Pete’s horse, exhausted and dehydrated, gives out from underneath him. Just as Kent rides up to him and brings out his gun, Pete reaches for his bow and arrow. They both shoot at the same time, with the camera cutting to black before we see who took the hit.
