1923 Season 2 Episode 3 recap: Alex’s American arrival is a rude awakening

1923 Season 2 Episode 3, “Wrap Thee in Terror,” sees two of the Dutton women suffering immensely, with Liz giving up on the life while Alex endures interrogation to enter the States. (Warning: major spoilers ahead!)
We only caught a glimpse of Alex in Season 2 Episode 2, with her ship being tossed around at sea, water leaking in while she and other passengers screamed in terror. Meanwhile, Liz was suffering after she was bitten by a wolf, meaning she had to endure several horrible rabies shots.
The troubles only continue for the two women as the Yellowstone prequel goes on, and while one is determined to reach the Dutton Ranch by any means necessary, the other wants to leave as soon as possible.
But first, Jacob and his crew must survive through the storm and get back home safely.
Cara gives Liz a harsh lesson in 1923 Season 2 Episode 3
The episode starts with Jacob and Zane still hiding out in the wagon. They need to do something before they freeze to death, and Zane suggests burning the wagon wood. Jacob’s worried, knowing Zane is fragile and may find it difficult to ride, but the other man insists it’s best for everyone.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we see the aftermath of Cara’s one-on-one battle with the wolf. Needless to say, she won, and the wolf’s carcass is hung up outside the house.
Cara then watches from the porch as the doctor loads up the body of his nurse (who was killed by the wolf in the night) into a wagon for transport. She then has to head up stairs to give another shot to Liz, who’s hiding out in the bathroom.
Once again, Liz has to be held down to endure the shot, and Cara gives her a stern telling off, reminding her how lucky she is to be alive. (At this point, Cara is contending to join the ranks of the best Yellowstone characters.) Others, as she points out, aren’t so fortunate.
Alex arrives at Ellis Island
Speaking of unfortunate, it’s time to catch up with Alex. Her ship finally arrives in New York, but instead of being able to depart immediately, she and the other non-Americans are taken to Ellis Island, where she’s forced to go through a painful, lengthy, and humiliating process of admission.
In the waiting room outside, she meets another woman who’s heavily pregnant. Alex is then horrified to find out that the immigration officers reject pregnant women, since they are deemed as being unable to work and provide.

She’s then submitted to a series of invasive medical check-ups, where she’s forced to strip naked and be poked, prodded, and fondled by an unfriendly doctor. Unfortunately, her pregnancy doesn’t get past him, and he marks her down for the next step of administration. (The scene is prolonged and difficult to watch, with Alex breaking down in tears over the humiliation of it all.)
In the hallway, she then meets a sly woman who encourages her to trade or buy her way into the States. One way of doing it would be sleeping with one of the officers, which this woman clearly intends to do. Furious, Alex snaps at her.
Alex makes it into New York City
It’s a long and brutal day, but Alex finally gets to the final stage: an interview. Even when she explains her situation, the officer thinks she’s making up her story about having an American husband; it’s one he’s heard many times before. Plus, she doesn’t have a marriage license or any evidence.
When he asks her if she even knows how to read, it’s the final straw. She eloquently reads an extract from a book and gives an impassioned speech about how she’s been made to feel like “cattle”, despite America being the self-proclaimed land of opportunity.
This ultimately convinces him to let her in, and she achieves it all without having to give him a dime.
Finally, she arrives in New York and tracks down a map to see how far Bozeman is (far). After a cautious warning from the ticket officer in Grand Central Station to keep an eye on her belongings (and one about the cold in Montana), Alex finds somewhere to sit and wait.
Runs His Horse makes friends with the cowboys
In an effort to secure their camping spot, Runs His Horse finds the ranch owner of the land they’re staying on. He offers help with their upcoming cattle run, and thankfully, the rancher is happy for them to stay where they are.
However, it’s bad news for Teonna, since her wanted poster is hanging all over town. Mamie is also investigating, and stumbles across the Comanche campsite Marshal Kent terrorized earlier on. She doesn’t like what she sees, and it appears as though it may turn into a race against the clock for her to find Teonna before he does.
Kent, meanwhile, works out that Runs His Horse and Teonna are likely trying to find work with the cowboys, and head towards the cow camps to try and find them.
Liz breaks it off with Jack
Cara watches as the Doctor gets ready to leave the ranch, still worried about Jacob and the boys. Thankfully, they arrive soon after, carrying Zane and his family on horseback. They quickly take Zane upstairs to be treated.

Once the doctor has a look, he explains that Zane has a subdural hematoma. Blood is collecting in his brain, so to fix it, he’ll have to drill a hole in his head to drain it. The problem with this is that it’ll have to be done with anesthesia.
Meanwhile, Jack finds Liz packing up her stuff in their bedroom. She’s leaving, and implores him to go with her, telling him, “If you want to be my husband, be him in Boston.”
Jack says the ranch is his home, and is awfully confused about her change of heart. But all he needs to do is watch her get another shot to understand that she’s been through tough times.
Spencer and Luca hit a roadblock
Finally, we catch up with Spencer and Luca. They’re in Maceo’s truck headed to Fort Worth to deliver whiskey outside of Prohibition law. However, they’re stopped when they see a roadblock ahead, where police officers are checking cars.
They quickly pull into a barn, where Luca gets out his gun and threatens Spencer to keep going. Spencer, not wanting to lose his life over some whiskey, gets out and decides to walk to the nearest train station and continue his journey.
Luca doesn’t want to disappoint his cousin, so the two say their goodbyes. However, Spencer doesn’t get very far before he hears the sound of gunfire. Looking over the hill, he sees Luca engage in a short but violent fight, where he’s shot by police for trying to get past with the booze.
Dejected, Spencer gets down on the grass. Meanwhile, Alex is back at Grand Central, where she writes a letter to Spencer, updating him with her progress. Shortly after, she goes into the ladies’ bathroom. However, she doesn’t see a suspicious-looking man lingering outside, who follows her in.
